SDF: US’s Decision to Withdraw from Syria a “Stab in the Back”
The Democratic Union Party (PYD) has expressed deep concerns over Washington's decision of withdrawing its forces from Syria, a monitor group said on Wednesday.
The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), in the meantime, has mentioned the sudden move as a "betrayal", saying that they were stabbed in the back.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said that the US forces have informed the commanders of the SDF of Washington's surprise decision, noting that it has resulted in disappointment for the SDF.
US President Donald Trump declared on Wednesday that his country's mission to defeat the Islamic State (IS) in Syria has been accomplished, and therefore, it is preparing for withdrawing the US forces from the country.
"We have defeated ISIS in Syria, my only reason for being there during the Trump Presidency," Trump said on his Twitter.
The PYD, the political wing of the Syrian Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG), which is the main component of the SDF, pointed out that the US's latest decree "is contradictory" to the western country's previous decisions in terms of delivering humanitarian and military aid for the Syrian Kurdish forces.
The observatory group further noted that the Turkish forces, meanwhile, have been stationed on the Syrian border areas, awaiting for a command to start an operation against the Kurdish forces in the region.
